Sometimes the best experiences happen when things don't go according to plan!
On Wednesday, October 14, Marais des Cygnes Valley middle school students traveled to Emporia State University (ESU) for what was supposed to be an exciting day at Cyber Con, an event focused on technology, cybersecurity, and STEM education. However, when the group arrived, they discovered that the event had been canceled due to an unexpected scheduling miscommunication.
What could have been a disappointing day quickly turned into an outstanding educational experience, thanks to the incredible hospitality and dedication of the Emporia State University staff.
Leticia Rust, Senior Director of ESU's Cybersecurity Research and Outreach Center (CyROC), stepped up and went above and beyond to make sure our students didn't miss out on a valuable learning opportunity. Rather than simply sending the students home, she helped organize an alternative experience filled with hands-on activities, technology demonstrations, and opportunities to explore the university.
Throughout the day, students explored several areas of campus, including ESU's Data Center, where they learned about the technology infrastructure that supports modern computer networks. They also visited the university's esports facilities, where they experienced gaming technology and virtual reality firsthand.
Students participated in interactive STEM activities involving Sphero robots, LEGO robotics, computer programming, and cybersecurity. They also explored network security through the Cyber Threat Defender card game and learned about cryptography through an activity called the Pringles Can Enigma.
The students even had an opportunity to explore the university's museum, where they enjoyed learning about fossils and prehistoric animals.
Of course, the technology was a big hit!
Student Bo shared, "I liked the EA Sports room. We were able to play Minecraft and VR head set. I jumped when I got scared on the VR head set, but it was fun."
For Josue, the hands-on learning opportunities made the biggest impression.
"I really enjoyed playing with the robot. It was fun to control. The thing I liked the most was playing with the Legos. I made a cool figure."
But perhaps one of the most meaningful reflections came from Kylen, who saw the visit as more than just a fun day away from school.
"I'd love to go there for college to become a teacher."
That statement alone demonstrates why experiences like this are so important. When students have opportunities to explore college campuses, interact with professionals, and experience new technologies, they begin to see possibilities for their own futures.
To make the day even more special, ESU generously provided lunch for our students, giving them another opportunity to experience campus life. Students also returned home with ESU shirts, stickers, and plenty of great memories.
MdCV staff member Eric Vogeler, who accompanied the students, described the experience as a tremendous opportunity for students to gain a practical understanding of technology, cybersecurity, and potential career pathways.
At MdCV, we believe education extends well beyond the walls of our classrooms. Experiences like this help our students discover new interests, explore future careers, and recognize opportunities they may not have previously considered.
We also believe it is important to recognize individuals and organizations who genuinely care about kids.
A very special thank-you goes to Leticia Rust and the entire Emporia State University team. Despite an unexpected change in plans, they demonstrated what it means to put students first. Their willingness to adjust schedules, share their expertise, and provide our students with a meaningful experience speaks volumes about their commitment to education.
They could have easily said the event was canceled and sent our group home. Instead, they turned an unfortunate situation into an opportunity our students will remember.
We are incredibly grateful for their hospitality, generosity, and dedication to making a difference in the lives of young people.
Thank you, Emporia State University, for showing our students what it means to go above and beyond!
It's a great day to be a Trojan! 🧡💙
