MdCV Gator

Marais des Cygnes Valley USD 456 has welcomed a new John Deere Gator XUV 845M with satellite guidance and a spraying system, expanding opportunities for students to learn how technology is used in modern agriculture.

The equipment was made possible through the Patterson Family Foundation’s $200,014 grant, which funded MdCV’s full request for its broader career and technical education initiative. The Gator and spraying system support the project’s goal of giving students practical experience with precision agriculture equipment used in today’s workforce.

Equipped with a StarFire 7500 satellite receiver and an in-cab display, the Gator brings field technology directly into student learning. Satellite positioning and assisted steering help operators follow planned paths more consistently. This technology supports activities such as mapping field boundaries, establishing guidance lines, and organizing soil-sampling routes.

Under the guidance of agriculture teacher Mr. Matt Railsback, students will have opportunities to connect these tools with lessons in crop production, soil management, equipment operation, and agricultural technology. They can learn how digital maps and accurate positioning help farmers plan their work and make better use of time and resources.

The spraying system adds opportunities to study sprayer calibration, application rates, nozzle selection, and coverage. Water-only demonstrations can show how travel speed and nozzle output affect the amount applied across an area. Students can also explore how consistent guidance helps reduce missed areas and overlapping passes—important considerations for controlling costs and using resources responsibly.

These experiences will put classroom math, science, and technology into practice. Students can calculate quantities, measure areas, evaluate results, and solve equipment-related problems while exploring careers in precision agriculture, agronomy, equipment service, and agricultural operations.

The new Gator joins the recently delivered plasma cutting table as another visible step in bringing the Patterson-funded initiative to life. Mr. Railsback’s work in developing these opportunities is helping students gain experience with tools that connect their education to future careers and further training.

MdCV also extends a special thank-you to PrairieLand Partners, the John Deere dealership in Emporia, Kansas, for helping with the purchase of the new Gator and spraying system. Their assistance is greatly appreciated as we bring these learning opportunities to our students.

MdCV sincerely thanks the Patterson Family Foundation for investing in our students, our school, and our rural community. Its support is helping students build practical skills and discover new possibilities for their futures.
