MdCV 8th grade students recently had the opportunity to take their classroom learning beyond the school walls by presenting at the Osage County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 5.
Under the direction of Mrs. Carrie Lingenfelter, students have been working on persuasive writing and chose a topic connected directly to their community: the need for an animal shelter in Osage County. As part of the project, students researched the issue, interviewed local veterinarians, and visited with local organizations that are not official animal shelters but still help care for stray animals until owners can be found.
Students used their research to write five-paragraph persuasive essays following MLA format. Their essays included a strong hook, a clear claim, and data to support their position. Through the research process, students learned not only how to build an argument, but also how to use real community information to support their writing.
One of the most meaningful parts of the project was hearing from local people connected to the issue. According to the information gathered by the students, every local person they spoke with shared that a county animal shelter is needed in Osage County.
At the County Commissioners meeting, students presented their findings through a slideshow and shared portions of their persuasive writing. This was a great opportunity for students to practice public speaking, civic engagement, research, writing, and real-world communication.
We are proud of our 8th grade students for representing MdCV well and for using their voices in a thoughtful and respectful way. Thank you to Mrs. Lingenfelter for creating a meaningful learning experience that helped students see how writing, research, and community involvement can work together.
Great job, Trojans!
