Two new inductees named
MdCV Chapter National Honor Society
April 17, 2008
National Honor Society is a service based organization that contributes to the general well-being of the school and the community. To be asked to join National Honor Society should be considered a great honor. NHS is not just an honor roll. Student members of NHS have outstanding academic records, but in addition to Scholarship, the NHS member has demonstrated excellence in the areas of Leadership, Service, and Character.
Each spring, all sophomores, juniors and seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher are granted the opportunity to apply to NHS. If the student chooses to apply, he or she must complete an application in which they describe their experience in leadership, service, and academic achievements. Students must also write a short essay.
Completed applications are then distributed to each of the members of a selection committee, and the committee ranks each applicant according to their achievements. This selection committee is comprised of five faculty members. Point values are assigned to each of the four attributes (Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character), and after each committee member has finished appraising the qualifications of the applicants, points are tallied and new members are chosen.
At Marais des Cygnes Valley High School, NHS will accept only applicants with scores of 500 or higher. This is a very high point requirement, and the MdCV NHS usually ends up accepting only about 20 percent of all applicants in any given year.
This year's newest NHS members are junior Katie Reece and sophomore Ariel Massey. These young ladies both scored 500 points or more during the application process. The induction ceremony will be held at a small breakfast on Friday, April 25 at 8:00 a.m.
Other members of NHS are seniors Dennis Becker, Jessica Schmidt, Lacie Allen, and junior LaShae Taylor. These members also assist Student Council with school and community services, such as the blood drive, canned food drive, and school dance.
