Meet Margie Beatty

By Margie Beatty

My name is Margie Beatty. I am the high school science teacher here at MdCV. I started my 22nd year in August. I teach Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science, and an Allen County Biology Class.

I was born in Leavenworth, Kansas a long time ago, (actually April 12th, 1954), yeah do the math, I am 54 years old. I do not look at chronological age as being a hindrance in anything I do. I graduated from Garden City High School in 1972, so I have seen a lot of educational changes through the years.

My bachelor’s degree is in Biology and with a minor in the Physical Sciences; this was from Pittsburg State University. I received a master’s degree in Biology with a Botany emphasis from Emporia State University. I would like to pursue my doctorate one day, but that is probably an idle dream at this time.

I have been married for thirty-five years and have two grown children, Rebel and Jackie. My son is married to a wonderful young woman named Joy Lynn. She is like another daughter to me. I also have a Jack Russell-Beagle mix named Jackson.

I am now a grandma of a lovely little girl named Quinn Grace Beatty. She is 14 months old and very smart. My daughter Jackie has completed the Police Academy at Hutchinson and is employed by the Kearney County Sheriff Department as a deputy sheriff. My other kids live in Ottawa and doing well; they are Quinn's mom and dad.

I still garden every year and have started experimenting with new things. For example this year I was successful growing celery. Next year I am going to try peanuts.

Besides working in my yard or garden, I love to read books -- especially James Patterson or John Grisham novels -- also, spending time over at my mother’s house, and playing cards with my girlfriends. I know this will sound unusual but I truly enjoy relaxing when I get home watching my two soap operas. I figure life can’t be all bad with the kind of stuff these people go through.

I have some excellent classes this year. I am looking forward to a fun year, it is busy enough already!! The students seem to enjoy my classes as do I. Life is good, can't complain.
