This book is about a girl named Mattie Gokey, who is sixteen
years old. Her mother dies, and then her older brother leaves, and
she is left to do all the housework. Her dad does not understand
her and expects her to do everything. Mattie is very smart and
wants to go to college, but her family needs her the most right
now. She is torn in many directions.
While working, a woman named Emily gives Mattie some notes and
tells her to burn them. Later that night, Emily's body is found in
the lake. Mattie reads the letters to solve the mystery. To find
out who killed Emily and to see if Mattie ever goes to college,
