Elementary Students Celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday

March 03, 2009

On March 2, the Marais des Cygnes Valley Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 105th birthday. The students wore their new "Reading" t-shirts in the afternoon as part of the celebration. On Monday afternoon, the students visited some of the classrooms and enjoyed listening to books written by Dr. Seuss, Laura Numeroff, Jane O’Connor, Patricia Polacco and Jan Brett. The students took home a sample of oobleck that they helped stir up while listening to Bartholomew & the Oobleck. They munched on cookies and drank milk while listening to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. The students wrote their name on a paper cookie and placed it on a graph to show their favorite cookie. The graph showed that Robin’s cookies were the favorite. Students created butterflies using crayons, paper and sticks after hearing Fancy Nancy Bonjour, Butterfly.  Thank You, Mr. Falker, read by author Patricia Polacco in a video, told how Mr. Falker helped her in school. The students received a piece of paper to write down how they helped someone this week. After listening to The Cat in the Hat, the students made an edible hat out of vanilla wafers, red licorice, and white frosting to look like Dr. Seuss’ hat. A photo of Jan Brett autographing one of the book’s that she wrote along with an autographed poster of The Three Snow Bears was displayed as the students listened to The Three Snow Bears. They drew a picture of a polar bear. Local pastor and storyteller, Rev. James Stigall entertained the students in different groups with “Mr. Black, and Mr. Brown, The Gingerbread Man and the Fox, Stone Soup, Abby Yo Yo, Brer Rabbit and Sis Cow.”  Everyone enjoyed celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  The National Education Association started Read Across America Day 11 years ago to build a nation of readers.
