Darren Shan is just a normal boy who happens to have a great love for spiders. He has three friends: Alan, Tom, and Steve. Alan produces a flyer that his brother had gained, which was the key to getting tickets to the Cirque Du Freak. Steve gets the tickets but there is a catch. He could only get 2 tickets for one flyer. Darren wins his ticket through a strange set of events. He then goes to the Cirque Du Freak where he sees many amazing things. The thing that mesmerized him the most was a large poisonous spider (also poisonous to humans) named Madam Octa. Once he saw her, he knew he had to have her. But his friend Steve, who was with him, saw something else -- something that would change Darren’s life forever. When the show is over Steve told Darren to go home without him, but Darren stayed. Darren saw the owner of Madam Octa with Steve, and Steve said, “I know what you are.” The man’s name was Larten Crepsley. He was a vampire. Steve asked him to turn him into a vampire’s assistant: half vampire and half human. But he couldn’t because Steve’s blood was tainted with evil. That next night Darren stole Madam Octa. Then while playing with her, when Steve was there, Madam Octa bit him. Darren then went to Mr. Crepsley and had him cure Steve, but it was in exchange for Darren becoming a vampire’s assistant.
