Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy

2008-2009 WAW Award Nominee for Grades 6-8

August 18, 2008

Genre: Historical fiction

Characters: Syvia, Papa, Mother, Dora

Setting: 1939, Lodz, Poland

Plot: this story about the Holocaust is based on true events and memories of Syvia Perlmutter, a Holocaust survivor and the aunt of author Jennifer Roy. The story revisits the invasion of the Germans into Poland, where they forced 160,000 Jews into a ghetto, or section of Lodz. By the end of the war in 1945, only 800 Jewish adults walked out, and because of their courage, twelve children also survived. Syvia Perlmutter was one of those twelve children.

Written in free verse, this novel is easy to read and similar in style to Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse.
