Singing Hands by Delia Ray

2008-2009 WAW Award Nominee for Grades 6-8

August 18, 2008

Characters: Nell, Margaret, Reverend Davis

Setting: Birmingham, Alabama, the late 1940s

Plot: Knavery, imprudence, impropriety, mortification, perfidy, ignominy, acrimony. These are words that Mrs. Fernley, a boarder in Augusta's house, uses to characterize the actions of Gussie (short for Augusta). But how could this possibly be? She is the daughter of a well-respected minister in the nine-state area of the South. Yet, because both of her parents are deaf, Gussie is under the impression that she can get away with behavior that would definitely not go unnoticed by most parents (such as singing in a loud voice during the minister's sermon).

So what outrageous misbehavior does Gussie commit that causes her sister to tell on her? What will her punishment be? Will she ultimately learn anything from the "punishment" chosen by her father?
