The Naked Mole-Rat Letters by Mary Amato

2007-08 WAW Award Nominee (Grades 6-8)

September 10, 2007

This book is an example of the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover (or title)."  Did you know that there really is an underground creature called a naked mole-rat? If not, you'll learn a lot about them by reading this book.

Synopsis:
Have you ever had days when you didn't feel like you could talk to anybody about anything, especially about what was bothering you? Have you ever had days when nobody seems to listen to you, or to care about you or things that were important to you? That's exactly how Frankie feels when she finds out that her father met "someone" special on a business trip to Washington D.C. --  and her dad is not exactly open or forthcoming with any details about this "someone." But eventually Frankie does find out about this "someone," and she feels somewhat threatened. She feels the need to protect not only her younger brothers (Skip and Nutter) but also her father from this new "intruder" by sending her e-mails, with the hope of somehow discouraging the budding relationship.

Characters:
Robert Wallop, Frankie, Skip "the Spy," Nutter "the Koala-wannabe," Beth, Johnny Nye, Ms. Trolly ("the Troll") guidance counselor,  Ratlady (Ayanna Bayo),  Justin Haxer and Ms. Young (drama/play coaches/sponsors)

Setting:
Pepper Blossom, Indiana

01/07/2008 I think that I can totally relate to what Frankie went through. I was four years old when my mother got married and I never got to see my dad again. i think that "The Naked- Mole Rat Letters" was a very interesting book. When Frankie gets mad at anyone she goes to her room and writes about it in her dairy and pretend she is like Helen Keller, who is deaf and blind in a play. It calms her down, I tried it and it really helps.
