On March 2, the Marais des Cygnes Valley Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 106th birthday. The students wore their reading t-shirts in the afternoon as part of the celebration.
On Tuesday afternoon, the students visited some of the classrooms and enjoyed listening to books written by Dr. Seuss, Eileen Spinelli, Margret and H. A. Rey. The students ate green eggs made of whipped topping and lime sherbet while listening to Green Eggs and Ham. During their activity time, they played “Cat Cat Hat” instead of “Duck Duck Goose.”
Local pastor and storyteller, Rev. James Stigall entertained the students in different groups with “The Story of the One Eyed Troll,” “Three Billy Goats Gruff,” “The Raven,” “The Moose and the Catfish,” “The Meadowlark” and “The Bear.” Students heard excerpts from Junie B. Jones is a Party Animal and colored a mask of Junie B.
Have you ever heard musical instruments help tell a story? Our students heard puppet Prokofiev tell the classic story Peter and the Wolf with the help of musical instruments. After students heard Curious George and the Chocolate Factory, they were guided in drawing Curious George. While coloring a book mark, they enjoyed a chocolate candy kiss.
Sophie’s Masterpiece, read by CCH Pounder in a video, tells how Sophie makes a beautiful quilt for the baby. The students used white yarn to make a large web. While listening to If I Ran the Zoo, the students colored animals and made a Zany Animal Flip book.
The National Education Association started Read Across America Day twelve years ago to build a nation of readers.
