On Saturday, October 10th, Skylar Carver, Josh Sowers, and Kayla Hempel went to Emporia for the William Allen White Awards Celebration. First the students had Jennifer Roy, author of Yellow Star and Sara Pennypacker, author of Clementine autograph their books. Next, the students toured the one room schoolhouse. Then they went to Peterson Planetarium and saw a movie called “More Than Meets the Eye,” which showed various star formations in the night sky during the year. After that, they ate lunch and went to the William Allen White Auditorium where they voted on the best posters about the books on the WAW list. Both authors spoke about writing their books.
“The most enjoyable thing was the one room schoolhouse where I found out that the teacher was usually 16, 17, 18, 19, or 20 years young. It was so much fun. I really want to go again.” Kayla Hempel.
“I had so much fun at the William Allen White Awards Celebration. My favorite part was getting to meet the author of Yellow Star. The author was a very nice girl. She had an aunt that lived in Lodz, Poland during the Holocaust. I was so surprised that her aunt really lived over there. The most important thing was that I had fun and I learned a lot. I got to see a one room schoolhouse. It was so much fun.” Skylar Carver
