Driver Education Class

Summer 2008

April 20, 2008

Marais des Cygnes High School will offer a Driver Education program during the 2008 summer months.  An initial meeting with the instructor, Matt Thomsen, is scheduled for  2:15 p.m., May 13, at the high school.  The actual classroom instruction begins Tuesday, May 27, at 8 a.m.

Driver Education is a performance-based class consisting of 18 classroom objectives and 36 behind-the-wheel objectives. Each student must complete these objectives in the prescribed time frame to be eligible for certification of completion.

This certificate of completion allows the student to obtain a Kansas Drivers License without taking the written test at the Drivers License Examination Station. Every student is required to fill out an application for a drivers education permit. This permit will cost the student $2, which must be paid by the first day.

The application permit must include an eye examination. An eye exam will be given at the school by the county health nurse. Any student who misses that exam needs to get an exam from their eye doctor and bring the documentation on the first day of class.

In addition, a fee of $125 for out-of-district students will be charged. This fee must be paid before the student will be allowed in the class. Approval must be obtained by April 2.

Classroom objectives
Driver Education classroom work will be held on May 27, 28, 29, 30, and June 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13 from 8-11 a.m. Students must attend all classes and complete all 18 objectives with the required percentage of mastery. Seventeen of the 18 objectives must be completed with at least a 70 percent, and the objective on Drugs and Alcohol must be completed with a score of 100 percent. All classroom objectives must be completed by June 13. MdCV schools will not provide transportation to these classes.

Behind the wheel
Each student must complete 36 behind-the-wheel objectives. These objectives are all necessary basic skills to safely operate a motor vehicle. Students will be introduced to each skill, practice each skill, and then tested on each skill. Students must must complete each skill un-coached to the satisfaction of the instructor. A driving schedule will be set up after enrollment in the class is complete.
