USD 456 School Board meeting
February 20, 2008
The Board of Education of Unified School District 456 met in
regular session, Monday, February 11, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. with the
following board members in attendance: Billie Jo Doty, Brian Lacey,
Greg McCurdy, Raylen Phelon, Marilyn Rose, Karla Saffle, and Kathy
Zabel. Others in attendance were Superintendent Ted Vannocker,
Principal Steve Burkdoll, Principal Twila Wollenberg, Donald Dyke,
Merrilyn Volkman, and Board Clerk Angie Volkman (arriving at 7:45
p.m.)
Board President Raylen Phelon called the meeting to order at 7:30
p.m. The board appoint Merrilyn Volkman to fill in as clerk until
Angie Volkman arrived. The minutes of the January 14, 2008 board
meeting were approved as well as the agenda, bills, and financial
reports as presented with additional bills.
The board authorized Superintendent Vannocker to acquire bids
and/or pricing considerations for the following:
° Vehicle bids: Suburban/ Dr.
Ed.
Small bus
° New T-8 lighting in classrooms at
Melvern & Quenemo
° New tile in the commons area
° New carpet for the end wall in the
large gym
° New football lights
° New restroom partitions in the
2-story building
° Complete the locker project
° Complete the tectum project
° Electric hand dryers at Melvern
& Quenemo
° Update painting and signs at
Melvern & Quenemo
° Finish the gym floor in Quenemo
° New classroom doors at Melvern
° New hand rails for the bleachers in
the large gym
The board entered executive session at 7:50 p.m. for 10 minutes with Superintendent Vannocker and Principals Wollenberg and Burkdoll in attendance for the purpose of discussing personnel matters for non-elected personnel. The executive session is required to protect the privacy interest s of an identifiable individual. Open session resumed at 8 p.m.
The first teachers/board negotiations meeting is planned for Monday, March 6, 2008, 6 p.m. at the USD 456 Board Office.
Following board discussion, the board approved endorsing the Osage County Revitalization Plan as presented by Superintendent Vannocker.
The board entered executive session at 8:15 p.m. for 10 minutes with Superintendent Vannocker in attendance for the purpose of discussing personnel matters for non-elected personnel. The executive session is required to protect the privacy interests of an identifiable individual. Open session resumed at 8:25 p.m.

Poster/Essay Contest winners: Kathryn Vaught, Aspyn Fuller, Chloe
Volkman, Trystan Elliot, Whitney Arb, Isaac Detwiler, Riane Elliot,
and Savannah Cannon
♦ MdCV Spelling Bee winners: Samantha
Volkman and Mary Warner. They will both be representing MdCV in the
county spelling bee to be held at MdCV on Feb. 15 at 9 a.m.
♦ Several high school forensics
students placed at the forensics meet on Saturday February 9 at
Council Grove
♦ 7th grade quiz bowl team members
placed first out of eight teams at the Scranton Invitational

Superintendent Vannocker reported to the board that Marais des
Cygnes Valley High School has gained national recognition as one of
the top 39 schools in Kansas. This comes from U.S. News &
World Report's "ranking of America's Best Schools," and has
also been noted in the February 1, 2008, issue of the Kansas
Association of School Boards (KASB) Review newsletter.
The board and administrators extended special thanks to the MdCV
Booster Club for all they do for our students. They are much
appreciated.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. The next regular meeting is
