USD 456 School Board meeting

The Board of Education of Unified School District 456 met in regular session Monday, January 14, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. with the following board members in attendance: Billie Jo Doty, Brian Lacey, Greg McCurdy, Raylen Phelon, Marilyn Rose, Karla Saffle, and Kathy Zabel. Others in attendance were Superintendent Ted Vannocker, Principal Steve Burkdoll, Principal Twila Wollenberg, and Board Clerk Angie Volkman.

Board President Raylen Phelon called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. The minutes of the December 12, 2007, board meeting were approved as well as the agenda, bills, and financial reports as presented.

Superintendent Vannocker asked board members to contact the district office with any items they would like included in the negotiations letter that will be presented to the MdCV Teachers' Association at the end of January 2008.

The board entered executive session at 7:55 p.m. for 5 minutes with Superintendent Vannocker in attendance for the purpose of discussion personnel matters for non-elected personnel. The executive session is required to protect the privacy interests of an identifiable individual. Open session resumed at 8 p.m. The board agreed to extend the contracts of Principal Steve Burkdoll and Principal Twila Wollenberg an additional year, 2009-2010, with salaries to be determined at a later date.

The board entered executive session at 8:05 p.m. for 5 minutes for the purpose of discussing personnel matters for non-elected personnel. The executive session is required to protect the privacy interests of an identifiable individual. Open session resumed at 8:10 p.m. the board moved to offer a contract to superintendent Vannocker for the 2008-2009 school year, with the salary to be determined at a later date. The motion carried 7-0.

Superintendent Vannocker reported to the board on a possible schedule for hiring a new superintendent for the 2009-2010 school year. the new superintendent will be selected by February 15, 2009.

The board approved the 2008 Senior Trip to Orlando, Florida, from May 9 through May 15, 2008.

The teacher inservice scheduled for January 14, 2008, went very well. The teachers attended meetings on reading strategies and anti-bullying. The inservice scheduled in February will be on First Aid/CPR training.

Congratulations to staff members Sherry Reed and Jill Kitselman. Both of them welcomed new baby girls into their families in October and January, respectively.

Principal Twila Wollenberg reported that the first grade classes are going very well. Thanks to Mrs. Creekmore, Mrs. Warner, and Mrs. Meyer the transition is going smoothly.  On January 15 the third grade class will be going to Topeka for a day at the Performing Arts Center, and a Well-Child Screening is scheduled January 25 at Melvern.

Principal Burkdoll distributed his report to the board highlighting academics. Under his spelling bee report, he noted that our school spelling bee will be on January 30 at 2 p.m. Marais des Cygnes Valley will also be hosting the county spelling bee this year, to be held on February 15 at 2 p.m. Principal Burkdoll also reported that the new system of changing drivers at the 5-mile corner is working well and will result in the district saving money on mileage/ fuel expenses.

Board member Greg McCurdy asked what the procedure would be if our district buses should be needed in an emergency situation. Superintendent Vannocker explained that either Mr. Burkdoll or he would need to be contacted, but that the district does allow our buses to be used.

Board member Marilyn Rose asked if there is a requirement that staff is certified in First Aid/ CPR. Superintendent Vannocker explained that there was not a requirement; it is something that the district does to help protect its students.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m. The next regular meeting is scheduled for February 11, 2007, at 7:30 p.m.
