Building a trail to improve community health
A project of the Melvern PRIDE
February 04, 2008
Melvern is one of seven Kansas PRIDE committees that will receive $3,000 in grant funding to encourage healthy physical activity in the community. Specifically, the committee plans to use the funds to complete a local walking and biking trail, and promote adult and youth usage of that trail.
PRIDE members will implement the grant project in 2008, and may possibly be ready to launch some community activities to coincide with the 2008 Walk Kansas Program, March 9 through May 3.
The competitive grant award was made available through the Partnerships for Healthier Kansas (PHK) program. In particular, this funding is designated for “Get It – Do It!” projects, with an emphasis on developing and encouraging effective intergenerational physical activities.
The other six PRIDE communities who received grants were Basehor, Glasco, Kinsley, Olsburg, Portis, and Stafford. The Kansas PRIDE Program is a volunteer-based statewide community development program administered by the Kansas Department of Commerce and Kansas State University Research and Extension.
