USD 456 School Board Meeting

November 21, 2007

The Board of Education of Unified School District 456 met in regular session, Monday, November 12, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. with the following board members in attendance: Billie Jo Doty, Brian Lacey, Greg McCurdy (arriving at 8:03), Raylen Phelon, Marilyn Rose, Karla Saffle, and Kathy Zabel. Others in attendance were Superintendent Ted Vannocker, Principal Twila Wollenberg, Principal Steve Burkdoll, and Board Clerk Angie Volkman.

The board approved the agenda as presented.

The minutes from the October 8, 2007 board meeting were approved with one correction.

The financial reports and bills were approved as presented with additions to the bills.

The board moved to adopt the prohibition of tobacco use in standing/seating areas at football games and track meets. This is an addition to the current tobacco policy that prohibits tobacco use in any USD 456 building. (Vote 6-0)

Principals Wollenberg and Burkdoll reported that evaluations on non-tenured teachers have been completed.

The board moved to authorize Superintendent Vannocker to obtain bids for new lockers for the junior high. The lockers would be placed on the west wall of the lower north/south hallway of the Melvern Attendance Center. Architect Dave Emig will assist in this process.

Principal Burkdoll proudly reported that we have received the Kansas State Standard of Excellence awards for the tests taken in April. The MdCV 8th grade received the Standard of Excellence award for reading and the the 10th grade received the Standard of Excellence award in math.  Principal Wollenberg also reports that we received awards at the elementary level. The Standard of Excellence awards received at the elementary school are as follows:  Building Level in Reading; 5th Grade Reading; 5th Grade Mathematics; 3rd Grade Reading. Congratulations!

Special recognition is given to the following students:
♦ JH girls basketball team -- they finished 2nd in the Scranton Pre-Season Tournament
♦ JH boys basketball team -- they finished 3rd in the Scranton Pre-Season Tournament
♦ HS football team -- making the KSHSAA playoffs for the first time in 21 years
♦ HS Quiz Bowl team for placing 2nd at their first meet of the year
♦ Chisom Spencer, Michael Spillman, and Bryan Phillips received special recognition for football in the Lyon County League
♦ Cheyenne Russell and Jessica Schmidt received special recognition for volleyball in the Lyon County League
♦ Dennis Becker and Bryan Phillips for being recognized by the KU Honors Program at a banquet on November 13
♦ Seven students have been chosen for the ESU Honors Band -- performance will be on November 17
♦ Andi Bush, Adreinne Graika, and Whitney Kraus for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the poster division of the Veterans Tribute Student Essay and Poster Contest

Principal Wollenberg reported that the Veterans Day Celebration was well attended with twenty area veterans participating. The elementary school raised $375 to donate to Lyndon High School, who organized the "Honor Flights" for area Veterans. We had five from the Melvern/Quenemo area go on the flight. Ms. Wollenberg further reported that parent/teacher conferences and the fall festival were well attended. 100% of the elementary students met their reading goals for the month of October. A celebration is planned for November 16.

We welcome back our custodians Bob Harred and Virginia Criqui who have been absent because of medical issues.

President Phelon congratulated the FFA on the success of their haunted house and the Quiz Bowl team for placing 2nd at their meet.

The meeting adjourned at 8:37 p.m. The next regular meeting is scheduled for December 10th, 200, at 7:30 p.m.
