USD 456 School Board Meeting
September 22, 2007
The Board of Education of Unified School District 456 met in
regular session, Monday, September 10, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. with the
following board members in attendance: Billie Jo Doty, Brian Lacey,
Greg McCurdy, Raylen Phelon, Marilyn Rose, Karla Saffle, and Kathy
Zabel. Others in attendance were Superintendent Ted Vannocker,
Principal Twila Wolleberg, Principal Steve Burkdoll, and Board
Clerk Angie Volkman.
The board approved the agenda as presented.
The financial reports and bills were approved along with the
minutes from the August 13, 2007, regular board meeting, as
presented with one additional sheet.
An enrollment report was given by Superintendent Vannocker. He
reports our enrollment is up approximately 4 students at this
time.
The board approved the following policies as presented: SH-1 Sexual
Harassment Policy; C-1 Complaints Policy; and Complaint of
Discrimination Form. These policies and forms will be distributed
to all staff and made available to students in the school
offices.
Superintendent Vannocker reported on projects. The sound reduction
material called tectum is ordered and will be placed on the walls
in the small gym. On October 8, the new lettering, with the school
district's name will be placed at the Melvern Attendance
Center.
Bob Harred had surgery on his knee September 10, 2007. The surgery
went well.
President Phelon moved to enter executive session at 8:05 p.m. for
35 minutes with Superintendent Vannocker and Principals Burkdoll
and Wollenberg in attendance for personnel matters for non-elected
personnel. The executive session is required to protect the privacy
interests of an identifiable person. Open session resumed at 8:40
p.m. Brian Lacey moved to approve six additional days for
Vocational Agriculture instructor Danny Rice, making the total
additional days number sixteen (16) for his 2007-08 teaching
contract. Greg McCurdy seconded the motion, motion carried 6-1.
(Rose abstained, accounting for the nay vote).
The board approved the MdCV FFA's proposal to attend the National
FFA Convention on October 23-26 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The
board moved to assist with expenses by paying for transportation,
motel, and sponsor meals. The meals for students are to be paid by
the MdCV FFA.
Chelsey Meyer was approved as a teacher aide in the first grade
classroom at the Quenemo Attendance Center. The first grade
currently has 27 students.
Principal Burkdoll reports that enrollment at the junior-senior
high school is up. Principal Burkdoll wanted to thank Mr. Vannocker
and the Board for their efficient use of funding to improve student
learning, as verified by the Standards & Poors report.
Principal Wollenberg reports the elementary open house and book
fair in August was a great success. She also reports that she
attended training for administrators on Anti-Bullying strategies
and that she is going to implement a curriculum for the elementary
students this fall.
Billie Jo Doty was concerned that there were not enough programs
printed for the football games. She requested that some programs be
placed at the concession stand. Brian Lacey was concerned about
leaving young children at home alone that have been dropped off by
the bus after school. Mr. Burkdoll reports that at the monthly bus
drivers meting he will stress to the drivers to pay special
attention to the very young riders when they are being dropped off.
Brian Lacey further inquired about having children checked for head
lice the first day of school. Billie Jo Doty asked about possibly
getting lockers for the junior high school students on the first
floor of the Melvern Attendance Center. President Phelon recently
cooked hot dogs at the High School Chapter Luau and was very
pleased with the students' attitudes and manners. President Phelon
would like to thank the MdCV staff for a great start to the school
year.
The meeting adjourned at 9:40 p.m. The next regular meeting is
scheduled for October 8, 2007, at 7:30 p.m.
