Ready, Set, Read! with BOOK IT!®
October 1 through March 31
September 17, 2007
The sixth grade class at the Melvern Attendance Center and grades K-5 at the Quenemo attendance site will be participating in the BOOK IT!® Reading Incentive Program, which kicks off on October 1 and runs through March 31.
A teacher at each grade level will set a monthly reading goal for each student. These reading goals can be set by minutes, pages, or books read -- to be determined by the classroom teacher.
When that goal is met each month, students will earn a Reading Award Certificate. Students can then take this certificate to Pizza Hut® where they will be rewarded for their reading accomplishment with a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza®.
On their first visit, students will also receive a BOOK IT!® card, a backpack clip, and a sticker for that card. On subsequent visits, students are given another Personal Pan Pizza® and another sticker for the BOOK IT!® card, to record their reading progress and attainment of goals.
A student can earn only one Reading Award Certificate per month from October through March. The certificate is redeemable only at participating Pizza Hut® restaurants during normal business hours and only if accompanied by a BOOK IT! student.. Only one certificate is redeemable per student visit. Certificates cannot be used for a group or class prize reward.
Each BOOK IT!® certificate expires one month from date issued. There is no purchase necessary and the pizza can be taken to go Substitution of equal or lesser value are available but may vary by location
BOOK IT!® is a reading incentive program that Pizza Hut® has sponsored since 1985. The promotion itself is currently used by more than 50,000 elementary schools. For more information, visit BOOK IT! 2007-2008.
National Young Readers Day
Pizza Hut® is also celebrating National Young Readers Day on November 13, with a special bedtime reading of The Remarkable Farkle McBride by children's author and entertainer, John Lithgow. The story will be webcast on http://www.bookitprogram.com beginning at 4 p.m. CST and will be viewable all evening long. Student participation in the event will give the child's school a chance to win one of several prizes by answering certain questions about the reading on the following day, November 14.
The grand prize package includes $10,000 to be used for educational resources, a school-wide pizza party, a new book for every student, five new computers for the school library, and 1,000 new books for the school to donate locally. The event is being promoted as "America's Biggest Bedtime Story." To learn more about author John Lithgow, visit Lithgow For Kids.
Building readers begins at home
Children who are read to on a regular basis show more interest in books and learning to read. Parents can help foster this inclination by establishing an at-home reading routine that will continue into elementary school and throughout life.
