Similar to the hymns sung by slaves prior to the Civil War, quarry-speech is a song that is sung by those who work in the quarry. It is also a means of communication, a form of telepathy, among the people of Mount Eskel. Only those from the mountain can hear it and use it; traders or lowlanders cannot. According to the story, this communication is made possible be the linder, the precious stone of which the mountain is composed, and the linder acts as the fiber or link along which the communication is transferred.
The young women of Mount Eskel, ages 14 through 17, have been designated as the pool of potential candidates from which the Prince of Danland must choose a Princess. For a year, the pool of candidates are taught to read books on the subjects of history, commerce, and practice the art of diplomatic negotiations, curtsy, dance, poise and conversation. Who will the prince choose?
Shannon Hale is also the author of The Goose Girl and its companion Enna Burning.
