The Misadventures of Maude March by Audrey Couloumbis

2007-08 WAW Award Nominee (Grades 6-8)

September 10, 2007

This is a pioneer or frontier story, also subtitled as the "Trail of the Notorious 'Mad' Maude March and her Gang of Robbers, Murderers, and Horse Thieves across Iowa & Missouri, 1869."

Eleven-year-old Sallie and her fifteen-year-old sister Maude become orphans when their Aunt Ruthie is unexpectedly shot during an exchange of gunfire, while leaving the local mercantile shop.

Rather than be taken under the wing of the town preacher and his family, they choose to seek out their only known next-of-kin, Uncle Arlen. To find him, they cross the prairie disguised as boys to protect their identity, and they endure several "misadventures" along the way. The story includes a map with legend to help visually trace the action of the story.

Characters:
Sallie March, Maude March, Aunt Ruthie, Uncle Arlen, Reverend Peasley and family, Ben Chaplin, Joe Hardin (Marion Harley), Willie
