Jr. High readers cast votes for favorite book

April 18, 2007

Two novels tied for the most popular William Allen White Award nominee book among readers at Marais des Cygnes Valley Junior High: Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko and So B. It by Sarah Weeks.  Each received a 20 percent share of the votes cast in a field of nineteen nominees.

All votes from Marais des Cygnes Junior High will be pooled with other students in grades six through eight across the state of Kansas to ultimately determine the 2006-2007 William Allen White Award winner. The deadline for submitting votes was April 15. A winner will be announced May 1.

Last year’s winner in the grades 6-8 category was The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau.

The book receiving the second highest number of votes from MdCV junior high readers was Yankee Girl, with 15 percent of the votes. Eight other books also garnered at least one vote from MdCV readers, showing a diversified interest in reading selections. Those books were Little Cricket, The Double Life of Zoe Flynn, Dust to Eat, The Teacher’s Funeral, Never Mind! A Twin Novel, Chasing Vermeer, Becoming Naomi Leon, and Escape to West Berlin.

Synopses for most of these novels may be found on the menu of the school website under the heading of “Library Resources.”
