This historical fiction portrays the division between East and
West Germany prior to the building of the Berlin Wall.
Families literally become separated as the government begins
to close the border and disallow free access between the two
segments of population.
However, before the border becomes totally closed, Heidi's family secretly make their own plans to escape from East Berlin, where they live, to West Berlin, where Heidi's father works. The tension is heightened not only because Heidi's mother is pregnant, but also because Heidi's grandparents live in East Berlin and she may never see them again or her friends from school.
