Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Muñoz Ryan
WAW 2006 Award Nominee (Gr. 6-8)
December 30, 2006
Naomi Soledad León and her brother Owen have lived with their
grandma ever since their mother abandoned them seven years ago.
Now, when their mother suddenly returns, she wants to take Naomi
with her to Las Vegas and leave her brother Owen with Grams. At one
point, the mother even hints that something bad might happen to
Grams if Naomi doesn't go with her. A twist in the plot leads the
story's characters to Mexico where a cultural celebration brings
unexpected surprises to the León family.
Readers will encounter a few Spanish words and phrases, such as fantástico, maravilloso, perdoname, el zócalo, mercado, piña, coco, and el barrio, but any unfamiliarity with these words will not detract from the storyline. They will also learn about the Festival of Radishes or "La noche de los rábanos" which annually draws artists and spectators to Oaxaca for a prize competition.
