The Teacher’s Funeral: a comedy in three parts by Richard Peck
WAW 2006 Award Nominee (Gr. 6-8)
December 27, 2006
This story is set in Indiana in 1904, a time when automobiles
are first being seen in the United States. Russell and his brother
Lloyd are all set to go back to their one-room schoolhouse, when
they find out their teacher has died. For a while, there is hope
among the brothers that the school will be closed down. Then the
school board decides to let it remain open if eight pupils
can be found. What is most disturbing to Russell, though, is who
the new teacher will be!
Although the novel may have a rather slow beginning for
some, it does pick up momentum, and the plot's tension will hold
reader interest all the way to the very end. As an example of
historical fiction, the story gives an inside look at the one-room
schoolhouse, use of an outdoor privy, a few student pranks, and of
course, the excitement and wonderment created by the introduction
of the amazing automobile.
In addition, the story explores feelings about quitting school,
and reasons why a young person should stay in school
Richard Peck is also the author of A Long Way From Chicago, A Year Down Yonder, and Strays Like Us.
