William Allen White Book Award
Student voting ends April 15
December 27, 2006
The "William Allen White Children's Book Award" honors the man
who was editor of the Emporia Gazette newspaper from 1896
until his death in 1944. One of his famous editorials was a eulogy to his
16-year-old daughter Mary, who loved to read books. The award
itself was founded in 1952 to foster the enjoyment of reading among
the youth of Kansas.
Students in their respective age categories are encouraged to read
as many books from the master list of nominees, and then vote for
their favorite in the spring. School librarians will then tally
votes from each age group and officially submit the totals online.
Voting ends April 15 and the winners will be posted by April 25 at
the William Allen White Award website hosted by Emporia State
University. Curriculum guides for each book are also available for
teachers at this site.
